Ålesund
Rebuilt in art-nouveau after the 1904 fire — Norway's most stylistically coherent city, sat on a chain of islands at the edge of the Atlantic.
In January 1904, Ålesund burned almost completely to the ground in a single night. It was rebuilt over the next three years in the international art-nouveau style — the only town in Norway with that level of stylistic unity. The result is an Atlantic-facing port city of curving facades, animals carved into doorways, and turret roofs in copper green.
What we plan to do here
- Climb the Aksla viewpoint for the city laid out on its islands.
- Jugendstilsenteret — the Art Nouveau Centre, in the old pharmacy.
- Drive out to Runde to see the puffins.
- A long evening on the harbor.
