Bodø
First stop above the Arctic Circle. The midnight sun is fully up. A working coastal city, gateway to Lofoten.
Crossing the Arctic Circle is the unofficial line where the trip changes character. Bodø is a bombed-and-rebuilt city — flattened in 1940, rebuilt practical — and it doesn’t try to be picturesque. It is the gateway to Lofoten and home to Saltstraumen, the most powerful tidal current on earth. It is also, since 2024, a European Capital of Culture.
What we plan to do here
- Saltstraumen at peak tidal flow.
- Norwegian Aviation Museum.
- Walk the new street-art trail through the city center.
- Catch the morning ferry to Lofoten.
