Lofoten (Reine)

Granite peaks rising directly out of the Norwegian Sea, red rorbu cabins on stilts, white-sand beaches above the Arctic Circle. The visual heart of the trip.

The Lofoten archipelago is what most travelers picture when they imagine Norway: jagged peaks straight out of the sea, fishing villages of red wooden houses on pilings, beaches that look tropical except for the temperature of the water. We base in Reine, on Moskenesøya, and spend two nights there.

What we plan to do here

  • Reinebringen — the staircase trail to the most famous view in the country.
  • Hamnøy and Sakrisøy at golden hour (which, in August, lasts hours).
  • Drive the E10 the length of the islands.
  • Beach time at Kvalvika or Bunes — both require a hike in.
  • A night without darkness.
