Norway's second-largest island and the country's quiet alternative to Lofoten — sharper peaks, fewer people, and the Tungeneset boardwalk on the open sea.

Senja is what a lot of Norwegian travelers will tell you, slightly conspiratorially: “go here, not Lofoten.” It has the same dramatic geography — peaks straight from the sea, fishing villages, white beaches — but a fraction of the visitors. The Tungeneset boardwalk juts out over the open Norwegian Sea, looking back at the Devil’s Teeth ridge. We close the trip here, slowly.

What we plan to do here

  • Tungeneset at sunset (which, in early August, is just before midnight).
  • Mefjordvær fishing village.
  • Segla — the island’s signature peak, viewed from the water.
  • Two nights of doing very little.
  • Fly home from Tromsø on the 7th.
