Tromsø
The Paris of the North — an arctic university city of wooden houses, polar history, and the white triangular silhouette of the Arctic Cathedral.
Tromsø sits 350 km above the Arctic Circle on a small island linked by bridge to the mainland. It was the staging point for nearly every Norwegian polar expedition of the 19th and early 20th century, and the Polar Museum tells the story of those journeys honestly — including the parts where they did not return. In August, we are there during the long after-glow of the midnight sun.
What we plan to do here
- The Polar Museum and Polaria.
- Cable car up Storsteinen for the city laid out on its sound.
- Arctic Cathedral — modernist, sharp-roofed, a work of architecture in its own right.
- A long sit by the harbor.
